How to feel good instantly – Shake the OJ

Feeling low in mood or energy? Then shake it up baby! Feeling good is actually quite  a simple process. Kids intuitively know how to do it, and like doing it all the time. In fact, if you understand kids, you will understand half the secret to happiness.

So what is it that kids do that makes them feel happy? They express themselves fully. When a kid smiles, she really smiles, when a kid runs, he really runs, and when kids play, they really play and act just like what is happening is real.

Because it feels so darn good! The more we express ourselves physically, the better we feel. Ever notice how depressed people don’t move? Head down, eyes down, shoulders slumped, breathing shallow, frowning and feeling heavy. Overweight people don’t tend to move very much either.

Do you think there is a link between being overweight and depression? You better believe there is.

By 2020, cardiovascular disease (which is primarily caused by poor diet and fitness) will be the number 1 killer on the planet. Number 2, will be depression.

So why does movement feel so good. Think of your body like a bottle of orange juice. And the pulp in a bottle of orange juice is like the ‘happy chemicals’ (endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin, dopamine) that move through your body and brain. If you want the OJ to taste good, what is the first thing you do when you get a new bottle? You shake it up! This allows the pulp which had come to rest at the bottom to circulate throughout the bottle. The pulp is what carries the most taste and the most nutrients.

We are no different. If you want the ‘happy chemicals’ to flow through you and get to your brain, you need to move. The more you move, the better you feel and the better you feel the more you move. Every part of a happy person has more movement than an unhappy one. A happy person’s head is up, eyes forward, breathing full, smiling wide. Their posture is taller and their shoulders are back. They use their hands more when they speak and they are more upright when they walk, indicating a greater sense of direction.

So how do you feel good instantly? Make a radical and highly expressive shift in your physiology. In other words shake up the bottle. Right now, do 10 star jumps, or sprint as fast as you can on the spot for 20 seconds. Go on, try it. I guarantee you, you will feel good instantly.

You may also feel silly, but that’s a separate thing based on your conditioned life experiences. Kids don’t care about silly until they are taught to care about it. Just notice how you feel in your body and in your mind. Then take a 5-10 deep breaths and notice how that feels in comparison to the short breaths you may have been using before.

Putting these principles into practice

1. Incorporate regular stretch breaks into your work. Every 30-60 minutes, get up, stretch and take several deep breaths.

2. Enjoy moments of reckless abandon. (If you want to do this in private fine, but do it). At least once a day, even if only for a couple of minutes, fully engage in a physical act with reckless abandon. E.g. Sing your heart out, dance like there is no tomorrow, run on the spot or outside with full intensity just because it’s fun. Be like a child who will sprint as hard as possible until he or she falls to their knees.

3. Practice being more expressive and upright when engaging others. They will perceive you as more confident, warm and professional.
